SYOG...

Sixty Year Old Guys are weakening America.

SYOG needn't be exactly sixty years of age.

I'm talking true WWII Baby Boomers, born Post-War 'til 1950 or 51.

I'm SYOG...born '47.

We are all protypical Sixty Year Old Guys, with absolutely zero precedent for our current situation.

This leaves us prey to a lot of screwball ideas, resurgent childhood fantasies, and a strange 'Deer in the Headlights' sense of finality.

How are we weakening America?

It has to do with fulfilling the dreams of The Greatest Generation.

Unfortunately, the only dream we have any hope of fulfilling at this late stage of the game is successful retirement.

What could be a better tribute to our hard working Dads than a Big Screen with 24/7 NFL reruns, a leather Barcalounger, a Ball and Claw Bathtub on the deck, and Boner Pills.

That's what they would have wanted, isn't it?

It's our obligation to complete the legacy.

Guess what?

Every Marketeer alive knows this, and is using it to peddle the dream...a dream conjured in simpler times and totally inappropriate right now.

Yet, we are buying...lock, stock, and barrel.

It's the well known 'Boys and their Toys' phenomenon gone wild.

'Kid with the most Toys at the end wins' is a popular phrase among the Boys and their Toys crowd.

Can you say, DUH?

Kid with the most toys at the end leaves a big mess for his offspring to deal with, and lines the pockets of savvy generational marketeers everywhere.

The toys themselves may accrue in value if the collector is shrewd and discerning, but the cost of gathering, displaying, and appreciating them has been astronomical, and is totally unrecoverable...at any price.

PERIOD!

Wouldn't you love to get up in the morning with a purpose, instead of killing time and feeling useless...staring at your Toys?

Let's face it, kicking back in the Barcalounger without a care in the world ain't happening any time soon.

Shake off the kinks and take a look at this...SYOG...some thoughts on the subject... from the recent few years...

SYOG are an enormous Economic Force...we just gotta find a purpose.

Clicking the link should give you some ideas.

  1. Smytty,
You forgot to mention SYOGs desire to live forever, or at least stay young forever. Hence, we are inundated with advertisements for pseudo facelifts, hair transplants, and skin-softening soaps to keep our "man suit" supple. What's next -- age spot cream for men?

Me? Actually, I'm enjoying getting old. I've found a deeper relationship with God, my wife, and my work. Best thing? I've lost the "disease to please." Guess I was always a bit of curmudgeon -- now I'm old enough to be one! Ain't life grand!

  2. Just had another thought. SDSYOGs (that's Single/Divorced Sixty Year Old Guys) want SMOBs (Super Models on Bikes). Just spend a few days hanging out on the front patio of a coffeeshop in Amsterdam, and you'll see a whole parade of them go by. Now, THAT's entertainment!
